The Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) in Coimbatore provides general insurance coverage to families who have an annual income of less than ₹72,000. The mediclaim coverage offered is of ₹1 lakh or ₹1.5 lakh a year for specific treatments or procedures. The scheme was first rolled out by the DMK regime in 2009, but only began covering a wide range of medical procedures in 2012 when the AIADMK was in power.
Recently, the health department conducted a review meeting of the patients who had availed of medical services under this scheme for the past four years. A total of 450 patients across seven districts attended the meeting and interacted with officials from the state government as well as the insurers. It has to be noted that the patients who had received payouts in excess of ₹4 lakh had been specifically called to review the success of the scheme. Furthermore, patients who had undergone high-cost treatments such as renal transplant, cochlear transplant, liver transplant and stem cell therapy were in focus.
Barring high-end procedures such as cochlear and renal transplants, no other expensive procedures are done in government hospitals, leaving the patient with no choice but to avail private medical facilities. One state government nodal officer said that the purpose of this review meeting was to basically understand the success rate of the surgeries that were performed with the help of this health insurance scheme.
