Find out if Tata Bolt lives up to its name

Overview

It's a bird, it's a plane. No, it's the Tata Bolt. The Bolt cannot fly but it surely can be termed as the Superman of hatchbacks. It features technical specifications, derived from the successful Zest, an exterior that lends it a stylish appearance and interiors that match renowned German cars. This sporty premium hatchback has captured the imagination of Indian car enthusiasts.

The Bolt is a part of the HorizoNext campaign and comes in petrol as well as diesel variants. It falls in the price range of Rs. 4.7-7.3 lakh. Targeted towards young India, Tata Bolt is bound to offer tough competition to other hatchbacks in terms of world-class technology, quality assurance and an enhanced driving experience.

Tata Bolt - At a Glance

  • Engine CC - 1248 cc (diesel), 1193 cc (petrol)
  • Seating capacity - 5
  • Price range - Rs. 4.7-7.3 lakh
  • Mileage - 17-19 kmpl (petrol), 17-23 kmpl (diesel)
  • Colors - Dune Beige, Platinum Silver, Sky Grey, Venetian Red, Pristine White
  • Variants - Tata Bolt XE, Tata Bolt XM, Tata Bolt XMS, Tata Bolt XT

Exterior Aesthetics

Sporting a chiseled body, Tata Bolt features sharp cuts and curves in all the right places. The car's blackened-out headlights and projector headlamps lend it a trendy look. Its trapezoidal grille, elegant side profile and blackened C-pillars at the rear contribute to maintain an all-round sporty look.

Other features include integrated turn indicators on rearview mirrors, body-colored door handles, chrome-plated waistline molding, 15-inch lightweight alloy wheels and tubeless radial tires. All in all, the Bolt's exterior is aesthetic, muscular and appealing.

The abundant usage of chrome trims coupled with Renault's design principles attempt to reduce the boxy look that is prevalent in most MPVs including the Lodgy. But, the edge it lacks in looks is made up thro ugh excellent comfort and performance.

Inside the Cabin

Bolt's interiors are as comfortable as a pilot's cabin, relaxing yet equipped to keep you alert. Tata has gone dark with Bolt's dashboard. The three-spoke steering coupled with a touch screen display ensures smooth navigation. Apart from this, the Harman touch screen infotainment system also features video playback from SD card, aux and USB support, Bluetooth, voice recognition and built-in HVAC controls.

Tata Bolt is a five-seater with adjustable rugby seats, integrated head restraints and side bolsters for drive comfort. Be it a sprint or a marathon, this Bolt can gallop fast without any inconvenience to its passengers.

Performance

Tata Bolt's petrol and diesel variants come with a five-speed manual transmission gearbox. Bolt's 1248 cc diesel engine is powered by a 1.3 liter Quadrajet powerplant. Its 1193 cc 1.2 liter Revotron petrol engine features a multi-point fuel injection system. The Revotron engine is a powerhouse featuring a three-in-one engine thanks to its multi-drive modes City, Eco and Sport.

The petrol variant offers a mileage in the range of 17-19 kmpl, whereas its diesel counterpart offers 17-23 kmpl. Tata Bolt scores high as far as safety is concerned. It comes with front solid discs and rear drum brakes, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), engine immobilizer, auto door lock systems and air bags.

Cons

  • Less luggage space
  • Similar styling
  • Ground clearance

Pros

  • Revotron engine
  • Infotainment system
  • Tata brand name

Tata Bolt is all set to strike like thunder on its competitors, the Maruti Swift and the Hyundai i20. The Revotron engine and infotainment system are undoubtedly its highlights. However, the ground clearance can be improved. Tata can also revisit Bolt's boot space and the Indica-like styling in the future. For now, it certainly is among the best cars to feature under the Tata banner.
