  • Digital Repository of Medical Records to Be Created

    by mohit bohra | Oct 05, 2023

To extend accessible, affordable, quality healthcare for its 120-crore population, the Indian government has planned to create a digital repository of each individual’s medical history. This will be done through an Aadhar-linked electronic health record (EHR) that is on par with the worldwide shift towards electronic health system.

For the health insurance sector, a networked database will provide the details to verify the claim made by policyholders, the procedures undergone by patients, etc. It will help to increase transparency and reduce fraudulent claims, according to Insurance Regulatory Development Authority of India (IRDAI) officials.

For patients, a centralised database ensures they do not have to carry their paper files when visiting or switching hospitals. Additionally, doctors will know the medical history of patients before actually meeting them.

However, it could entail a possibility of premium hikes based on the medical history of the patient who is or will be a policyholder. Moreover, with data sharing, there is a fear of misuse of health records. For instance, accessibility to an employee’s medical records could be a matter of discrimination at the workplace. Therefore, it is necessary for the government to ensure that there is privacy law in place. A robust regulation system would be required to oversee the proper usage of the EHR database.

  • Carcinogenic Foods You Did Not Know About!

    by icicilombard 002 | Oct 05, 2023

A cancer is uncontrolled proliferation of cells in our body. Anything that causes cancer is called a carcinogen. We've all known that smoking and alcohol consumption dramatically increase the risk of cancer, but what you're about to read now might come as an absolute shocker to you.

What you are going to learn is how common foods that you consume daily or quite frequently can be a cause of concern.

    Popcorn, the microwavable variety

Probably the most convenient and popular of all "packed" foods, microwave popcorn is simplicity personified. Unfortunately, chemicals found in the linings of the bags release potent carcinogens in the popcorn when microwaved.

    Artificial sweeteners

Though marketed as a "healthy option to the calorie-rich sugar," artificial sweeteners are wolves in sheep’s disguise. Aspartame, sucralose (your favourite Splenda or Equal), saccharine and many other such sweeteners are all linked to various kinds of cancers.

    Conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables

These may contain as many as 50-60 different types of pesticides and residues of chemical fertilizers, all of which are either known, confirmed or potential carcinogens.
The chart shows a few farm products like grapes, apples, strawberries etc. that generally contain pesticides. Other foods like cabbage, bananas or tomatoes have comparitively less pesticides in them.

    Refined sugars

The pure-white, crystalline table sugar and High Fructose Corn Syrups (HFCSs) are the best sources of nutrients for cancer cells and can drastically increase their proliferation. And so, many of our food-goodies, like pies, cookies, candies and other processed foods, which contain either refined sugar or HFCS, are a health hazard.

  • 7 Frequently Asked Questions on Personal Accident Insurance

    by iciclombard 01 | Oct 05, 2023

While there isn't a way to safeguard yourself or your dependent family members from mishaps or bad luck, there definitely is a way to cover your expenses in case you meet with such unwanted luck!

While many of us are aware of life insurance, motor insurance and health insurance, very few know about accident policies, also known as Personal Accident Insurance policy. Go through these seven frequently asked questions to know more about this policy and who all should opt for it.

    What is Personal Accident Insurance?

Personal Accident Insurance protects your finances by providing a lump sum compensation in the unfortunate event of a fatal accident or one that disables you permanently. The compensation shields you and your loved ones from a financial crunch. This insurance also covers accidental hospitalization cost.

Note: The amount of compensation depends upon the sum insured.

What qualifies as Permanent Total Disability?

    1. Loss of both eyes
    2. Loss of both hands
    3. Loss of both feet
    4. Loss of one hand and one foot

I am a homemaker who spends majority time at home. Do I also need a personal accident insurance?

Accidents can happen to anyone. Motor accidents, rail accidents, natural calamities, the list is endless. These can sound scary. But, getting intimidated is not the solution, being financially prepared is. Opting for a Personal Accident Insurance helps you to meet expenses in case a crisis arises.

I travel to different countries often for business and at times for leisure. What if I meet with an accident outside India?

You can be rest assured, accident policies offer worldwide coverage. Your claim will be paid even if you meet with an accident overseas.

I already have a health and life insurance cover. Why should I buy Personal Accident Insurance?

Life insurance offers a death benefit to your nominee in case you pass away. Health insurance provides a compensation and/or reimbursement of hospitalization and other medical expenses.

A Personal Accident Insurance policy, on the other hand, insures against the financial risk that could arise due to accidental permanent total disability or accidental death of an earning family member. In short, the policy is essential as it strengthens your financial portfolio securing the future of dependent family members against unforeseen events.

What happens if I am hospitalized after an accident takes place? Would it cover hospitalization expenses?

Yes. You can avail optional covers by paying an additional premium. An Accidental Hospitalization Cover provides reimbursement for medical expenses related to hospitalization and a Daily Cash Cover provides you with a cash allowance for each day of hospitalization.

Would I need to pay a high premium for availing Personal Accident Cover?

No. For example, the premium for a basic policy of Rs. 5 lakh (duration 1 year) is approximately Rs. 610. It is but a small price for ensuring your family's financial security!

I have a family to support. Does Personal Accident Insurance cover death?

Yes. All you need to do is mention the name of your nominee in the policy document. The sum insured will be paid to your nominee by the insurance company.

Available online, a Personal Accident Insurance is a great financial solution to secure your finances against accident-related expenditures. Don't miss purchasing this crucial cover!

  • Impact of Air Pollution on Health

    by iciclombard 01 | Oct 05, 2023

Air pollution resulting in countless casualties across India

Air pollution in the country has been a hot issue these past few years. According to a recent Greenpeace Report India published, India surpassed China in number of premature deaths; India reporting 3,283 premature per day compared to China’s 3,233 per day.

The tragic news is that the global number is set to increase by 7.5 million in 2040 unless the energy sector is able to curb its emissions.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) made it public that fine particulate matter has the greatest impact on health and give rise to various health issues, especially in the urban areas.

    The Pollutants

The urban regions are major generators of pollution due to industrialisation. The common sources for this rise in pollution is contributed towards the following:

    • Increase in number of vehicles
    • Emissions from factories and power plants
    • Combustion of biomass
    • Kerosene usage for lighting
    • Unregulated use of fuel energy

The fine particulate matter is released on burning of fuel and other sources like vehicle, power plants and households. The WHO report states that deaths due to indoor pollution have been higher than outdoor air pollution. Not surprising since many homes in India still use biomass for cooking and kerosene for lighting which easily saturates into the atmosphere increasing the level of pollutants.

Further, use of unregulated fuel energy are the contributing reasons for this man-made environment crisis. The effects of air pollution and fine particulate matter can be managed only by adopting cleaner fuel for cooking and electricity.

    The Health Impact

As per the statistics released by WHO, the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is known to create a broad spectrum of health issues ranging from chronic illness to death. The particulate matter less than 2.5 micron is the most persistent and can remain in the air for weeks. It enters deep into the respiratory system through nose and throat and entering the bloodstream from the tiny air sacs.

The body then naturally reacts to these foreign materials by releasing them through coughing and sneezing. The issue becomes acute when these particles contain other toxic cancer-causing chemicals. Over time it can cause serious ailments like heart disease, asthma, chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. Pregnant women need to be more careful, as long-time exposure results in premature births and babies born with low-weights. Infants and senior citizens may struggle to battle such pollutants leading them to fall sick often.

The WHO report further indicates that 1/5th of 3 million deaths worldwide were due to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure. It causes long-lasting cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

    Need for a Change

Fine particulates are not just an environmental problem but also great indicators of health crisis to come. Its worldwide presence makes it imperative that strong steps need to be taken to curb their increase.

India needs to take strong measures as exemplified by China, who have had a year-on-year improvement. Lack of initiative to curb emissions in form of indoor and outdoor pollution could be lethal to the Indian masses.

One of the long-term solutions that help fight the medical expenses that arise due to pollution is a comprehensive health insurance plan. Such a plan will not only cover indemnity-based benefits, but also fixed benefits that pays a lump sum with critical illness cover. In new age plan, such as ICICI Lombard’s Complete Health Insurance, you have the opportunity to reimburse for expenses not covered in your policy through the wellness program.
