What is IDV (Insured Declared Value)?

The Insured’s Declared Value (IDV) in car insurance is the approximate value of your car in the market today. It is also the maximum amount your insurer may pay if your car is stolen or damaged beyond repair, as per the policy terms and conditions.

To put it simply, IDV is the current value of your car after deducting depreciation.

Depreciation is calculated using standard rates defined under the Indian Motor Tariff. These rates help estimate how much your car’s value has reduced over time, so the IDV stays fair and realistic.

Let’s understand this with an example. Suppose the listed selling price of your vehicle was ₹4,00,000 and you added accessories worth ₹50,000. The total value of your car would be ₹4,50,000. And the applicable depreciation after two years would be ₹90,000 (which is 20% of ₹4,50,000). As a result, your IDV would be ₹4,50,000 - ₹90,000 = ₹3,60,000.

Pay As You Use Plan
