Planning to travel to Austria? Plan with ICICI Lombard travel insurance policies, which you can avail for a single round trip, or multiple trips in a year. With benefits such as protection against medical expenses, total loss of baggage, and much more, what are you waiting for?

Travel insurance is mandatory visa requirement if you are travelling to Austria. ICICI Lombard International Travel Insurance is Schengen-approved.

Austria is a small, landlocked country that offers alpine scenery, world-class museums, cobbled quaintness, and scrumptious food. The country is content to bask in its good living and elegant, opulent past as the former head of one of Europe's grandest empires.

If you are planning a travel to Austria, it is vital to keep in mind that there may be uncertainties while there. We, at ICICI Lombard, understand how stressful it may be during an emergency, be it medical or non-medical. It is wise to pack in a travel insurance policy to compensate unexpected medical emergencies as the medical costs abroad may be very high as compared to India. Our travel insurance policies aim to simplify your travels and keep you covered.

Things to Do in Austria

Austria is famously beautiful for its imperial palaces, majestic mountains and exquisite cakes. Although small area-wise, its landscape changes quickly and dramatically. Here are some note-worthy destinations for you to visit:

  • Absorb the Grandeur of Vienna

The former headquarters of the Hapsburg Empire and the capital of Austria, Vienna has tucked away an astonishing stash of cultural and art treasures. Staatsoper is Vienna's foremost opera and ballet venue. Get a taste of the architectural brilliance and musical genius that have shaped this cultural bastion.

Grandeur of Vienna
  • Participate in the Musical Vibes of Haus der Music

An interesting and unusual museum as it explains the world of sound and music in a highly interactive way for both children and adults. The exhibits are spread over four floors covering everything related to sound creation – from Vienna's Philharmonic Orchestra right to street noises!

  • Ski in the Alps

The Alps is one of the best places for skiing and snowboarding; you can also wander away from the marked trails and into the great white wildness of the mountains. Be careful not to get lost though!

  • Embrace the Beauty of Nature at Tyrol

West towards the mountain province of Tyrol, Austria's grandiose Alpine scenery begins to emerge. As Tyrol's main town, Innsbruck offers the most convenient mix of urban sights and Alpine splendour.

  • Flaunt your Tech-savviness at Linz

The Danube River snakes through Wachau, one of the most scenic stretches of Linz, where castles and vineyards cling to steep slopes above quaint villages. If you are tech-savvy, the Ars Electronica centre is the ultimate destination that displays technology, science and digital media of the future. Interact with robots, animate digital objects, convert your name to DNA, or (virtual) space travel in the labs. Opened in 2009, the new centre resembles a futuristic ship by the Danube after dark.

  • Marvel the Intricate Baroques at Schloss Belvedere

Belvedere is a masterpiece, home to the world's finest baroque palaces that perfectly embody Viennese art nouveau alongside other late 19th–early 20th century Austrian works. Relax at the sculpture-dotted gardens of the lavish Lower Belvedere, which features the richly frescoed Marble Hall.

  • Enjoy the Music of Salzburg

The men and women of Salzburg are forever smiling to the tunes of Mozart and The Sound of Music. Thanks to its charmingly preserved old town, splendid gardens, baroque churches, and one of Europe's largest intact medieval fortresses, Salzburg feels as if it’s made for tourism. If you follow classical music, you'd be pleased to know that the Austrian icon, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg. You can even visit his house and maybe catch a tribute concert.

Music of Salzburg
  • Hike and Bike at Tauernradweg

Well-marked cycling and hiking trails fan out from Krimml into the surrounding Alps. The Tauernradweg is a 310 km trail, that runs south through the mind-blowing scenery of the Hohe Tauern National park to Salzburg and then to Passau.

  • Relax in peaceful Stephansdom

Vienna's Gothic masterpiece Stephansdom or Steffl, is the city's pride and joy. A church built in the 12th century, it has magnificent Gothic stone pulpit that presides over the main nave. Visit when the main nave is not closed for mass.

Schengen Visa Procedure

The key benefit of a Schengen Visa is less paperwork and hassle-free travel. The Schengen zone mostly consists of neighbouring countries. Schengen Visa makes intra-zone travel from one country to another easy, as one does not need to apply for multiple visas. Hence, backpackers wanting to explore Europe need apply for just a single visa, which allows them to visit all the countries within the Schengen zone.

Insuring health and travel risks is one of the pre-requisites for obtaining a Schengen Visa. Whether one travels for business, study, or leisure, the European Council mandates adequate medical insurance for all.

The specific requirements for Schengen Visa are:

  • Medical insurance coverage
  • Physical presence of the insurance provider in the Schengen zone
  • Valid travel insurance policy for the traveller’s entire duration of stay
  • To apply for an Austrian Visa, you need to fill and submit the visa application form. The form can be availed through Austrian online portal (http://www.austria.info/in/service-and-facts/travel-planning/visa-for-austria ) or through third party vendors like Travel Visa Services (http://www.vfs-austria.co.in/ ).

To apply for visa, keep the following information handy:

  • Passport
  • Two passport size photographs
  • Reason(s) for visiting
  • Travel health insurance confirmation of minimum € 30,000 coverage within Austria, and the entire Schengen area
  • Flight Itinerary with dates and flight numbers specifying entry and exit from Austria
  • Hotel booking for the whole duration of the intended stay in Austria
  • Proof of civil status (marriage certificate, birth/ death certificate of children or spouse)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the period of stay
  • Duly filled application form
  • Visa fee
  • The current visa application charges for Indian residents can also be availed through Austrian online portal. The same portal can be referred for all other visa related queries. For further details and queries, you can also reach out to the Austrian Embassy and Consulates in India.

It was my first overseas trip and I decided to travel solo. Austria is a beautiful and homely country. The first day did not turn out as planned as my foot got stuck in the hotel escalator, leaving me with 3 broken bones in my right leg. Thankfully I had ICICI Lombard travel insurance, which covered me for the injuries and hospital expenses.

I have been frequently travelling to Schengen countries over the years but this was my first visit to Austria. On my last day, I had a train to catch and having reached the station late, I ran, slipped and dislocated my shoulder. I felt helpless and panicky. Once I calmed down, I informed ICICI Lombard about my condition and they promptly helped me out; would highly recommend ICICI Lombard to friends.
