Imagine trying to drive without being able to turn your car; it’s scary, right? If your car steering is not working, it can put your life at risk. It’s important to understand why this happens and how we can avoid it.

Reasons Behind Steering Wheel of Car Not Working

The following reasons could account for your car’s steering wheel not working —

  • Low Power Steering Fluid

The primary reason for a stiff steering wheel is insufficient power steering fluid. This happens when fluid leaks from the pressurised hose area. It would be better to get it repaired to prevent issues instead of just refilling the power steering tank, which is a temporary fix.

  • Thick Power Steering Fluid

Just like every other fluid in a vehicle, power steering fluid can also degrade over time. Thick fluid makes steering difficult at low speeds, as it loses its lubricating properties. It’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for changing the fluid. The solution is to remove the old fluid and refill it with fresh fluid.

  • Faulty Power Steering Pump

The power steering pump generates the pressure needed to turn the steering wheel smoothly. If the pump malfunctions, turning the steering wheel becomes difficult, especially when driving at a low speed.

  • Damaged Serpentine Belt

Another reason your steering wheel can be stiff is if your serpentine belt is cracked or broken. The belt can become loose as it wears down over time. It's advisable to repair or replace the belt as soon as possible to avoid complete failure of the steering system.

  • Defective Steering Rack

Your steering rack can also be damaged if it is exposed to extreme temperatures and road debris. If the inner bushings are damaged, it can cause leaks, accumulate dirt, and further damage the rack and gear.

  • Incorrect Tyre Pressure

This is one of the reasons for a stiff steering wheel. Check the air pressure of the tyres and ensure that they are inflated as per the vehicle manufacturer’s PSI recommendation. Also, check the alignment of the tyres, as this could lead to a stiff steering wheel.

If you're wondering why my steering wheel is not working, look for the above causes. You must always ensure proper servicing and maintenance.

Conclusion

It's important to regularly service your car to prevent steering issues. Also, make it a point to insure your vehicle. Car insurance offers benefits like cashless network garages and roadside assistance.
