Understanding Four-Stroke Engines in Modern Cars

Four-stroke engines operate through four distinct phases: intake compression power and exhaust. This efficient system enhances vehicle performance and fuel economy while minimizing environmental impact.

The majority of modern vehicles have a four-stroke engine. This engine enhances a car's performance and fuel economy and does little harm to the environment. It is an internal combustion engine with a four-phase operating cycle and is highly efficient in generating power. In this article, we will discuss all the crucial things regarding the four-stroke engine in cars.

Phases in a Four-stroke Engine

A four-stroke engine in cars works through four stages called the four-stroke cycle. They are as follows:

Intake Stroke

In this phase, the engine's intake valve is opened, and the piston is driven down. During this, the engine cylinder fills with the fuel-air mixture.

Compression Stroke

The piston is driven upwards, pushing in the air-fuel mixture. As this mixture is expended and compacted, its pressure and temperature rise.

Power Stroke

The piston is pulled upwards, and a spark is created at the head of the spark plug. This ignites the air-fuel mixture. Due to the combustion, the piston gets pushed down, driving the engine.

Exhaust Stroke

In the last stage, the piston returns to the top position, and the engine's exhaust valve opens. While doing so, the gas emitted from burning goes out, and the engine is set for the next stage of the cycle.

What Are the Different Parts of a Four-stroke Engine?

A four-stroke engine comprises several significant parts, and some of them are:

Spark Plug

The spark plug is designed to light the air-fuel mixture.

Piston

It is the part that moves inside an engine cylinder and generates power during the combustion process.

Valves

There are intake and exhaust valves, which allow air and gas to fill the space inside the cylinder and allow the gases to leave it after the burning process.

Cylinder

This is the region where the combustion occurs.

Crankshaft

It transforms the linear motion of the piston into rotational motion that operates the vehicle.

Conclusion

The four-stroke engine has emerged as the most efficient technology for car propulsion. It is also fuel-efficient. A good four-stroke engine car will have reasonable longevity and good performance. The owner should buy a car insurance policy to further protect the vehicle in good condition.
