Whether you're a new car driver or have been driving for years, one of the most important maintenance jobs you should know is how to check a car's oil level. Low oil amounts can lead to increased friction, burning and possibly catastrophic engine damage, perhaps costing thousands in repairs. Let's walk through this easy yet important car-repair skill.

Steps on how to check car engine oil

Here are the steps on how to check engine oil level properly:

● Step 1: Prepare Your Car

Park your car on level ground, as a bumpy surface can give you an incorrect number. Ensure the engine is turned off and has had time to cool down. This causes the oil to drain back into the pan for an exact reading.

● Step 2: Locate the Dipstick

Open your car's hood and look for the dipstick. It usually has a bright colored handle (often yellow or orange) with an oil can sign. The dipstick is usually found near the center or side of the engine bay.

● Step 3: Remove and Wipe the Dipstick

Pull the dipstick fully out of its tube. Wipe off the oil from the dipstick using a clean rag or paper towel. This gives you a clean start for a correct reading.

● Step 4: Check the Oil Level

Reinsert the dipstick back into its tube, then pull it out again. Now, study the tip of the test. You'll notice two marks or lines— the upper mark indicates "Full," and the lower mark indicates "Low" or "Add."

The oil amount should be between these two marks. You need to add oil if it's at or below the lower mark. If no oil is visible on the dipstick, your oil level is dangerously low and you should add oil quickly.

Conclusion

Checking your car's engine oil level is a simple job that takes just a few minutes but can save you from expensive fixes down the road. While regular maintenance is crucial for avoiding technical issues, it's equally important to protect your vehicle financially through car insurance. Purchasing car insurance online offers the ease of comparing plans, getting quotes and secure coverage that fits your needs and budget. Just as regular oil checks help avoid engine damage, comprehensive car insurance helps shield you from sudden financial pressures related to your car.
