A car oil pump is an essential part of the vehicle. It helps circulate oil under pressure to lubricate the bearings, reduce friction between moving parts and cool the engine.

What are the Different Types of Oil Pumps in a Vehicle?

Oil pumps can be of different types depending on the purpose and make of the vehicle. Their main function is lubrication and oil circulation.

Here are the most popular types of oil pumps:

  1. Rotor Oil Pump

These are found in internal combustion engines and are also called gerotors or trochoidal pumps. They are placed inside the crankcase for convenient drawing and circulation of engine oil. The working mechanism of rotor oil pumps depends on an inner gear and an outer rotor to generate the pumping action. Rotor oil pumps are very accurately engineered structures that are most commonly used in automotive engines.

  1. Twin Gear Oil Pump

With two gears to pump oil in this pump setup, twin gear oil pumps are the most preferred type of oil pump due to their efficiency in functioning. Also called external pumps, they work by means of a pair of intermeshing gears that help pump oil to the engine parts. These gears turn in opposite directions, trapping the oil and ensuring its smooth supply.

  1. Front Cover Oil Pump

Front cover oil pumps can be located internally or externally in the engine and are almost similar to rotor pumps. An inner drive gear and an outer rotor direct the workings of these pumps to generate high oil pressure, which is used in vehicles with high-performance engines.

Conclusion

Ensuring the maintenance of your car oil pump is important for efficient vehicle performance. Also, get a robust car insurance policy with extensive coverage against damages, accidents and theft.
