How is road tax applied to other state vehicles in Telangana?

Telangana road tax applies to out-of-state vehicles operating beyond 12 months in the state, requiring payment and re-registration. Tax calculation depends on vehicle invoice value, depreciation (newer vehicles pay more), and different rates for various fuel types (petrol, diesel, CNG, electric) and categories (commercial vs. private). Temporary visits for tourism or business are typically exempt.

Vehicles registered outside Telangana can operate in the state without paying road tax for a limited period. However, if the vehicle remains beyond 12 months, the owner of other state vehicles must pay a road tax, a mandatory levy imposed by the Telangana State Transport Department, and apply for re-registration. Usually, temporary visits for tourism, business trips, or short-term stays are generally exempt from the road tax.

Failure to pay Telangana road tax on time can lead to fines, vehicle seizure, and issues with car insurance validity during inspections.

How is road tax for other state vehicles in Telangana calculated?

  • The tax is based on the vehicle’s invoice value and depreciation over time.
  • Newer vehicles pay higher road tax, while older vehicles receive depreciation-based reductions.
  • Different rates apply for petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles.
  • Similarly, commercial and private vehicles are taxed at different slabs under Telangana’s Motor Vehicles Act.

Ensuring compliance for a hassle-free experience

If you’re a vehicle owner planning on staying long-term in Telangana, ensure to stay updated on tax rules and complete formalities on time. Keeping road tax and car insurance valid ensures hassle-free travel and avoids penalties. For re-registration, consult the local RTO for documents and fees.
