Premature Atrial Contractions (PACs) are premature heartbeats and they occur in the upper chambers of the heart or the atria (the two upper chambers of the heart). These extra heartbeats can disrupt normal heartbeat and are known as heart arrhythmia. PACs do not damage the heart and can occur in healthy individuals who do not have any heart problems. So, what are the causes of PACs?

What are the Causes of Premature Atrial Contractions?

The exact causes of premature atrial contractions are unknown to date. However, studies show that certain traits, conditions, and habits may increase the chances of developing Premature Atrial Contractions. Some of the causes of premature atrial complexes are:

  • Hypertension
  • Smoking and a long history of drug abuse
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Consuming too much caffeine and other similar stimulants
  • No or less physical activity
  • To much stress and anxiety

Apart from these, several conditions can contribute to the development of the condition. These include:

  • Injuries to heart muscles
  • Heart valve disease, including mitral valve disease
  • Atrial septal defect - a congenital condition wherein there is a hole between chambers in the heart
  • Other heart-related birth defects
  • Heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Heart failure

Besides these conditions, certain medicines can also lead to PCAs. The medications include:

  • Weight loss drugs
  • Monoamine oxides
  • Beta-blockers
  • Digoxin
  • Chemotherapy drugs
  • Tricyclic antidepressants

Conclusion

The causes of premature atrial contractions are many. From a sedentary lifestyle to taking a lot of stress, high BP, and heart problems, certain medicines are also responsible for the development of PCAs. A heart patient is at high risk, but any healthy individual can be affected by premature atrial contractions. You should keep all these health conditions in the backdrop and purchase health insurance to save yourself from financial stress during medical emergencies.
