It can manifest as a severe disease in humans, especially in its septicaemic and pneumonic forms. If not treated, it can lead to a case-fatality ratio ranging from 30% to 100%, as per WHO findings. What are the Symptoms of Plague?

The plague disease symptoms vary as per the form. The most common conditions and their symptoms are:

  • Septicemic plague: Septicemic plague can emerge either as the primary symptom of plague or as a progression from untreated bubonic plague.
    • Onset of fever
    • Chills
    • Profound weakness
    • Abdominal pain
    • Shock
    • Potential for internal bleeding, affecting the skin and various organs
  • Bubonic plague symptoms: Individuals experiencing this form of the disease may exhibit symptoms such as:
    • Fever
    • Headache

    • Weakness
    • Development of one or more swollen and painful lymph nodes known as buboes.
  • Pneumonic plague: This third common type of plague has an incubation period of 1-3 days. Patients experience the emergence of symptoms such as fever, throbbing headaches, profound weakness, and the swift onset of pneumonia marked by:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Persistent cough
    • Occasionally, the presence of bloody or watery mucous.
