Under the Motor Vehicles Act (1988), every biker must carry an active two-wheeler insurance policy. It is essential to renew your two-wheeler insurance online promptly to ensure it doesn't lapse, you remain compliant with the law, and you have complete peace of mind.

Is it Possible to Renew Bike Insurance After the Expiration Date?

You can opt for online or offline bike insurance renewal after expiry. However, the duration of this grace period differs among insurers. If you do not renew your policy within the grace period, it will be considered as a break-in case. Your bike insurance policy could be discontinued if you exhaust the grace period; you will also lose your accumulated NCB and will have to purchase a new policy. Thus, renewing your policy as soon as possible is wise.

  2. Visit the Insurer's Website: If you have already chosen an insurer or want to find a new one and port your policy, you could go to the website of your previous or new insurance provider.

Input the Requisite Details: You must provide the registration number of your bike, the lapsed insurance policy number, and all the other required details pertaining to the renewal of your policy, like a copy of the previous policy and renewal notice sent to you by your insurer. You will also need your Driver's License and photographs.
  2. Policy Selection: Choose a plan that meets your needs and budget. Opt for add-on covers to widen the policy's scope of coverage. Check your bike's IDV (i.e., insured declared value) and select the appropriate one.
  3. Make the Payment: You can make the payment via your debit/credit card, UPI, or any other preferred online mode. Upon successful completion of the payment process, you will receive the soft copy of your bike insurance policy in your email ID.

If you choose the offline renewal mode, an inspection of your vehicle becomes mandatory. You will have to take your bike to the insurer's nearest branch along with the requisite documents. If the insurer finds all documents in order, you will start receiving coverage within two working days.

The insurer will refer your case to the underwriter if you decide to renew your policy after one year or a longer duration.
