Indian roads are diverse, with bumpy gullies, pitted streets, and smooth highways. A good motorcycle suspension is essential to navigate these roads comfortably on a bike. It is a system of springs and shock absorbers. The best bike suspension systems absorb shocks from sudden braking on uneven terrains, maintain tyre contact with the ground, and ensure riders' safety.

Different types of motorcycle suspension

The motorcycle suspension system is primarily categorised into two: front and rear motorcycle suspension. Each type serves specific functions to improve the overall riding experience.

Front motorcycle suspension

It acts as a hydraulic shock absorber attached to the front wheel axle of the bike.

Types of front motorcycle suspension

  1. Telescopic fork: This type consists of two hydraulic tubes that slide up and down. It has springs and oil inside to absorb shocks. It is simple in design and widely preferred for its effectiveness.
  2. Upside-down (USD) fork: It is an advanced variation of telescopic forks.  USD or inverted fork positions its thicker part at the bottom to improve strength and reduce weight, especially at high speeds and rough terrains.
  3. Springer Suspension: This suspension system connects the fork tubes to the frame and handlebars, providing good handling capability. The design also ensures structural integrity during long rides.

Rear motorcycle suspension

It works with the front suspension, enabling smooth and controlled bike rides.

Types of rear motorcycle suspension

  1. Mono suspension: It places a single shock absorber centrally beneath the seat to provide more consistent braking, cornering, and handling. It is increasingly preferred for its sporty characteristics and better weight distribution.
  2. Twin-shock suspension: This is a more traditional system found in commuter and classic motorcycles. It features two shock absorbers on either side of the rear wheel, offering good stability.
  3. Pro-link system: It connects the rear swingarm directly to the motorcycle's frame through a linkage. The pro-link system provides varying damping rates (stiffness adjustments) based on road conditions.

Conclusion

Understanding the different types of motorcycle suspension can help you make an informed decision when selecting a bike. When you buy your ideal motorcycle, don't overlook the importance of protecting it with a suitable two-wheeler insurance policy. This will provide financial assistance during repairs and replacements. Obtaining comprehensive bike insurance is recommended as it provides extensive coverage, including own damage and third-party liability protection.
