The automobile industry is fiercely competitive in India, as new models come in with advanced features and performance. Safety is a priority for family cars, and Tata Motors has ensured it. One of the most popular choices from Tata Motor's lineup is the Tata Tiago. Their models have undergone several crash tests under the Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program). So, what was the Tata Tiago safety rating in the Global NCAP? Let us find out in this blog.

Tata Tiago: A brief history

Tata Motor's Tiago has made its mark in the Indian automobile industry with its combination of performance, style, and reliability. Since its launch in April 2016, it has been one of the top models in the compact hatchback segment. However, the Tiago stands out for its construction and advanced range of features.

The Tata Tiago quickly became popular in the Indian market thanks to its premium interiors, youthful design, and impressive safety features. In 2018, the Tiago further evolved with the introduction of the rugged NRG variant. The launch of Tiago EV in 2022 and the i-CNG AMT variant in 2024 marked the brand's push for eco-friendly options in the next-generation model. In terms of safety, the Tiago continued to excel, as demonstrated by the NCAP rating of Tata Tiago.

Tata Tiago global NCAP safety ratings

Tata Motor's 5-door sedan model Tiago has performed remarkably well in the Global NCAP crash tests. It has earned a 4-star safety rating for adult occupant protection. However, the Tata Tiago NCAP rating for child occupant protection was 3-star. A detailed insight into the safety ratings is provided below:

Tata Tiago adult occupant protection rating

The overall score for adult occupant protection in the Tiago NCAP rating was 12.52 out of the maximum 17. It received a 4-star safety rating for all adult occupants, offering decent protection to the driver and front passenger.

According to the Global NCAP crash tests, the driver and passenger's head and neck received 'good' protection. The remark for the driver's chest protection was 'marginal,' while that for the passenger was 'adequate.' There is impact from dangerous structures behind the front compartment. Hence, there was 'minimal' protection to the driver's and passenger's knees. However, there was adequate protection for the driver and good protection for the passenger's shin bones. The bodyshell was 'unstable' and incapable of handling further loadings. The footwell area was unstable, too.

Tata Tiago child occupant protection rating

The safety rating of Tata Tiago for child occupant protection is 3-star. It scored 34.15 points out of the possible 49 and signifies adequate protection for child occupants. According to the Global NCAP protocols, a 3-year-old and an 18-month-old child dummy were used. Both were placed in the rear-facing position with adult seat belts.

In both cases, the seatbelt was able to prevent forward movement in case of a crash. The CRS (Child Restraint System) for the 18-month-old dummy was permanent, and both dummies received 'good' chest and head protection. The recommended child restraint system was compatible with the car. However, the Tiago offers only a lap belt in the rear centre position with no ISOFIX anchorages. The model, therefore, does not provide a three-point belt in all seating positions, reducing the Tiago safety rating to 3-stars for child occupants.

Tata Tiago safety features list

Now that you are familiar with the safety rating of Tiago let's look at some of its most significant safety features:

  1. Dual Airbags: The driver and passenger airbags reduce the impact of collision.
  2. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System): The ABS prevents the locking up of wheels during intense braking.
  3. EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution): The EBD maintains a balance between the braking forces of the front and rear wheels.
  4. CSC (Corner Stability Control): The CSC offers additional stability and balance while cornering.
  5. Rear Parking Sensors: The rear parking sensors assist with safe parking.
  6. Seat Belt Reminder: It alerts everyone in the vehicle to wear seatbelts to avoid injuries in a collision.
