All those acquainted with the world of automobiles and driving know how vital a gearbox is as a car component. Playing with diverse speeds and maintaining them is possible because of a gearbox. If you need more knowledge about gearboxes and wish to explore more, you are at the right place. Let us unwind the gearbox meaning and its parts in this article.

What Is a Car Gearbox?

Wondering what is gearbox in a car? A gearbox is a mechanical device that transmits power from one component of a machine to another by changing the speed, torque, and direction of rotation. It consists of gears and associated parts that work together to achieve this. The gearbox is the most dependable and extensively validated means for transferring power.

Generally, a gearbox has two types: manual transmission and automatic transmission. As the name suggests, the driver manually chooses all the gears in a manual gearbox. You will find this type of gearbox mostly in traditional cars. Next, the automatic transmission is the one that adjusts gear automatically based on acceleration and deceleration.

Parts of gearbox

Let us now look at gearbox parts:

  • Driving Shaft: It's where the power from the engine is initially transmitted before being distributed to other parts of the transmission system.
  • Main Shaft: The main shaft moves power from the engine to the wheels and carries the gears.
  • Layshaft/Counter Shaft: This shaft plays a supporting role. It retains parts of the gears in a gearbox and helps in reversing the direction of rotation.
  • Gears: Gears work together to regulate your car's speed and power output. They are available in a variety of sizes and forms. They control how fast or slow your car moves.
  • Bearings: By lowering friction, bearings enable parts to move smoothly and sustainably. They are vital to stop needless deterioration.
  • Gear Shift Forks: Gear shift forks are responsible for moving the gears on the main shaft and engaging them with other gears.

Conclusion

Now that the gearbox's meaning and importance are apparent to you, it is always suggested to have four wheeler insurance. This is an expensive item and, if damaged, can cost you a lot.
