Introduction

According to the Maharashtra Traffic Police data, 334 people were killed in road accidents in Pune in 2018 as a result of traffic accidents. As a result of road accidents, 917 people died in rural areas of Pune during the same period.

The Maharashtra Traffic Police report identifies overspeeding and unintentional traffic rule violations as two leading causes of collisions. It is crucial to note that this situation is prevalent throughout India, not limited to Pune.

Attempting to curb this disregard for traffic laws, the Union government introduced several provisions into the Motor Vehicles Act 1988. On 1st September 2019, the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act became effective. There have been multiple revisions to the Act, including the Pune traffic challan rates.
