Finding stray scratches on your car windshield can be incredibly frustrating. Along with making the car look less than perfect, too many scratches also affect the windshield’s visibility. As per RTO guidelines, car windshields must have a visibility of at least 70 per cent. Debris, wiper blades, tree branches, etc., often damage windshields. These scratches can vary in depth, from superficial surface scratches to deeper ones. Superficial scratches typically affect the windshield’s outer layer, while deeper scratches penetrate the inner layers, making them more challenging to repair. But there are several ways to remove scratches from car windshields. Let’s look at these in detail.

Ways to remove scratches from car windshield

Various hacks and tips teach you how to remove scratches from car windshields. But of course, some tips work, and some don’t. So, we have listed some tried and tested methods you can try out and get your windshield back to looking brand new.

  • Whitening Toothpaste

You can use whitening toothpastes that have baking soda as an ingredient to remove scratches from car windshields. Alternatively, mix some non-gel toothpaste with baking soda for the desired results.

Application procedure

  • Apply a small amount of toothpaste on the scratched part.
  • Take a clean microfiber cloth or any soft, lint-free cloth and use it to rub the toothpaste over the scratches gently.
  • You may see a difference in the scratch’s appearance as you rub the toothpaste.
  • Allow it to sit for some time. Repeating this procedure a few times is necessary till the scratches get easily wiped off.
  • Repair Kit

Repair kits are also available easily in the markets. Such kits usually include an acrylic scratch remover for minor scratches, cerium oxide for deep scratches, a syringe for application and other equipment necessary for the procedure.

Application procedure

  • Use a mild car wash soap and water to remove debris, dirt, and grime from the surface.
  • Dry the area with a soft cloth.
  • Put the compound on the buffing pad, usually included in the kit.
  • Always wear safety glasses and gloves to prevent potential harm.
  • Use the syringe to apply the resin to the damaged area carefully. Apply enough resin to fill the entire scratch.
  • Level the raising and put curing strips over the area.
  • Remove excess resin and cure it with UV light provided in the kit.
  • Inspect the scratch later and polish it if necessary.

  • Acrylic Nail Polish

Buying good-quality acrylic nail polish for your car is relatively easy and doesn’t require a hefty investment. This method, though, is primarily effective for addressing very minor scratches on your windshield.

Application procedure

  • Begin by cleaning the affected area, as dirt or debris can hinder the effectiveness of this repair technique.
  • After cleaning, carefully apply a thin layer of acrylic nail polish over the scratch. Be attentive to avoid using too much; excess polish can create a messy appearance. It’s crucial to clean off any surplus nail polish before it dries to achieve the best results.
  • Once the applied nail polish has thoroughly dried, you should notice a visible improvement in the scratch’s depth and appearance.

  • Glass Scrub Compound

This polishing compound can remove dirty and stubborn grime, so we recommend using it cautiously. It can be very harsh and abrasive and damage the glass if you apply too much pressure.

Application procedure

  • First, clean the area to ensure there is no dirt left.
  • Use the scrub compound and a clean cloth and begin rubbing it on the scratch in small circular or back-and-forth movements.
  • Keep doing it until you see improvement.

Clean the area with a cloth after you are satisfied with the results.

  • Professional Help

You can also get professional help to remove scratches from the car windshield. This is especially helpful when the scratches are deep. If you are new to automobile repair and care or are just unsure of how to go about it, relying on professionals is probably your best bet, as they have many ways to fix scratches. They can even inspect the car and let you know of any underlying problems. Sometimes, the cracks and damage are beyond repair, so you might need to replace the car windshield altogether.

Conclusion

Car windshields are critical for safety, providing drivers with structural integrity and clear visibility. Scratches on a car windshield, when mild, can be fixed through DIY procedures. But for deeper ones, you need external help. Since these windshields would cost you a lot, getting it covered under car insurance is better. It offers peace of mind as well as financial protection.
