What is a DOHC engine?

A DOHC engine features two camshafts per cylinder bank, enhancing performance and fuel efficiency. It allows higher RPMs, better airflow, and improved power output. Many automakers prefer DOHC engines for efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Modern cars have 4-stroke engines, which can be either dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) or single overhead camshaft (SOHC). DOHC was introduced to improve the car's volumetric efficiency, which means increased engine power. Let’s discuss in detail what is a DOHC engine?

Dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) meaning

A dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) is a setup of the vehicle engine cylinder head. It has two camshafts per bank of the cylinder head, one for the intake valves and another for the exhaust valves. So, the DOHC meaning, in simple words, is that it is an engine variant that breathes better to produce more horsepower from the smaller engine displacement. Some of the features of DOHC are:

  • This variant design enables easy implementation of fuel and power efficiency-enhancing technologies like variable valve timing (VVT). VVT is the process of changing or altering the timing of a valve lift.
  • It also allows the engine to rev higher, as the valves are placed in an optimised setup for the best performance. This engine's 4-valve-per-cylinder configuration enables better airflow even at high engine speed.
  • DOHC engine type has the spark plug placed in the middle of the combustion chamber, allowing efficient combustion.
  • The DOHC engine has more components, such as camshafts, tappets, and rocker arms, which produce more power and faster response. Its separate components make modification and replacement of this engine easy.
  • DOHC engine can generate greater power at high speeds, enabling the car to travel at higher speeds.
  • Many automobile producers are opting for DOHC engines as they help comply with carbon emission regulations.

Conclusion

Once you have decided to buy a vehicle, find the best deals to make a profitable purchase. However, don’t forget to check out the car or the bike insurance, which is mandatory for vehicle owners.
