In recent years, the Indian government has implemented several measures to enhance vehicle identification and promote environmental awareness. One such initiative is the introduction of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) accompanied by colour-coded stickers. These components not only ensure safer roads but also provide clear indicators of a vehicle's fuel type and compliance with emission norms. This blog discusses the specifics of HSRPs and their associated colour-coded stickers, along with the process of getting an HSRP sticker for your vehicle.

What is an HSRP?

HSRP stands for High-Security Registration Plates incorporating colour stickers. Termed as ‘special,’ these registration plates offer more features than standard ones and boast enhanced security attributes.

What is an HSRP Colour-Coded Sticker?

A colour-coded HSRP sticker has a particular function. It provides vital information on the fuel your vehicles use and the emission standards.

These stickers are affixed to the vehicle's windscreen from the inside and are colour-coded as follows:

  • Blue Sticker: Denotes petrol or CNG vehicles
  • Orange Sticker: Indicates diesel vehicles
  • Green Sticker: Assigned to electric vehicles

Engraving the HSRP always utilises VIN lasers, making it resistant to easy alteration. The HSRP and the colour-coded sticker can cost around INR 1100 and may differ depending on your car’s size and type.

Is it Mandatory?

Yes, the installation of HSRPs and their corresponding colour-coded stickers has been mandated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for all vehicles registered prior to April 2019. This aims to standardise vehicle identification and promote environmental consciousness.

At present, the enforcement of this rule is particularly strict in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. Vehicles in these areas found without HSRPs or the appropriate colour-coded stickers are fined. For instance, in Delhi, the traffic police impose a penalty of ₹5,500 on offenders. It is anticipated that other states will adopt similar enforcement measures in the near future.

Where Can You Get the Colour-Coded Stickers Installed?

Vehicle owners can obtain HSRPs and the associated colour-coded stickers through authorised channels. The process varies slightly depending on the state:

  • Online Booking: In states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, owners can book their HSRPs and stickers online via the official portal com. This platform allows users to select their vehicle type, fuel type, and other relevant details to schedule an appointment at a nearby authorised dealer or opt for home delivery, where available.
  • Regional Transport Offices (RTOs): Alternatively, vehicle owners can visit their local RTOs to apply for and obtain the HSRP and colour-coded stickers. It's advisable to check with the respective RTO for specific procedures and requirements.

Ensuring that the HSRP and stickers are procured from authorised sources is crucial, as unauthorised plates and stickers may not comply with government standards and could lead to penalties.

What is the Procedure for Installation?

The installation process for HSRPs and colour-coded stickers is straightforward and designed for user convenience:

  1. Online Application:

    • Visit the official portal bookmyhsrp.com.
    • Choose between 'HSRP with Colour Sticker' or 'Only Colour Sticker' based on your vehicle's current status.
    • Fill in the required details, including vehicle registration number, chassis number, engine number, and owner information.
    • Select your preferred appointment slot and location for getting the HSRP or sticker installed, or opt for home delivery if available.
    • Complete the payment process online and save the acknowledgment receipt.
  2. Appointment and Installation:

    • On the scheduled date, take your vehicle to the chosen dealership or RTO with the necessary documents and the acknowledgment receipt.
    • Authorised personnel will affix the HSRP using non-reusable snap locks and apply the colour-coded sticker on the inside of the windscreen.
    • Ensure that the details on the HSRP and sticker are accurate before leaving the premises.

It is important to adhere to the scheduled appointment to avoid delays and ensure compliance with the regulations.

Conclusion

Due to their usefulness and availability, colour-coded stickers are becoming more popular. In certain states, such as UP and Delhi, you can use your HSRP through online processes. These will ensure adherence to vehicle regulations while also easing other operational steps like car insurance.
