Often referred to as the "black plague," Yersinia pestis is the bacterium that causes plague disease. Every year, a few thousand cases of plague are documented globally. But what causes plague? Let us closely examine the plague causes in this article.

What are the Causes of Plague?

Plague disease caused by Yersinia pestis can prove fatal for those who contract it. Here is how it is transmitted:

  • Transmission through flea bites: Most commonly, people contract the plague through the bite of fleas that have previously fed on infected animals, including mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and prairie dogs.
  • Direct contact with infected individuals or animals: The plague can also spread through direct contact with a person or animal carrying the infection.
  • Transmission via scratches or bites from infected pets: Plague is caused by scratches or bites from infected domestic dogs or cats.
  • Human-to-Human transmission (Pneumonic Plague): When it comes to pneumonic plague, respiratory droplets released during coughing have the potential to spread from person to person.

Conclusion

In summary, plague disease caused by Yersinia pestis is primarily transmitted through flea bites, direct contact with infected animals or individuals, and occasionally via scratches or bites from infected pets. Pneumonic plague can spread between humans through respiratory droplets. Health insurance can help manage treatment costs and provide financial security.
