Diet sodas are carbonated beverages for those willing to reduce their sugar or calorie intake via drinks. They are sweetened with artificial sweeteners such as cyclamates, aspartame, saccharin, or sucralose.

Some people prefer drinking diet soda to lose weight, given the claim it has zero calories. However, the authenticity of this claim is still controversial. Let us explore the truth behind the belief!

Diet Soda for Weight Loss

Regular carbonated drinks are usually high in sugar and calories. Studies have indicated that drinking sugar-sweetened beverages can lead to obesity.

Meanwhile, diet sodas as beverages have very few to no calories; hence, no significant nutrition. So, people may consider it apt to lose weight with diet soda.

However, it is not recommended to gulp down diet sodas too frequently just because these have zero calories. Artificial sweeteners used in these drinks increase the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome. These artificial sweeteners also raise the risk of contracting cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney problems.

Diet soda has been found to whet appetite by stimulating hunger and hormones, altering the sweet taste receptors, and triggering dopamine response in the brain. In some people, this response often leads to a higher intake of sugar or calorie-dense foods, which results in weight gain instead of the contrary.

According to scientific research, carbonated beverages - whether regular soda, diet soda or carbonated water—might lead to hunger and increased food intake instead. The consequence is weight gain.

Drinking regular soda or other carbonated beverages in moderation is not hazardous, though.

If you are highly inclined to drink soda daily, switching from regular to zero-calorie/diet soda alternatives is advisable. But this choice should be coupled with diet control and a close watch on weight.

Until future research ascertains the effects of low or zero-calorie beverages on weight, be mindful of choosing your drink. Evaluate their possible consequences on your health.
