Leptospirosis starts with an infection due to a bacteria called Leptospira. These pathogens can enter your body in different ways, through your mouth, nose, eyes, or tiny cuts or breaks in your skin. Once inside, they travel through your bloodstream, making their way to your organs, especially your kidneys. The infection can spread to other people or animals in many ways, continuing the cycle.

Let’s understand the leptospirosis causes.

What are Leptospirosis Causes?

The common reasons for the leptospirosis to occur include the following

  1. Skin Contact

If your skin comes into contact with water, soil, or surfaces contaminated with infected animal urine, you could be at risk, especially if you have cuts, scratches, or even tiny abrasions. The bacteria can sneak in through these openings or even through your eyes, nose, or mouth.

  1. Waterborne Transmission

Leptospira bacteria can survive in water or damp environments for quite a while. This means that swimming, wading, or even bathing in contaminated lakes, rivers, or puddles can put you at risk. The bacteria enter your body through your skin or mucous membranes without you even realising it.

  1. Contaminated Food and Beverages

Consuming something contaminated with an infected animal’s excreta can also cause leptospirosis infection. That is why food storage and hygiene are very important, particularly in regions where the disease is prevalent.

  1. High-Risk Occupations & Outdoor Activities

Some occupations and activities put one at risk of developing leptospirosis. Farmers, sewage workers, and individuals who reside in flood-prone communities are at a higher likelihood of exposure to dirty water or soil. Outdoor enthusiasts, such as hikers, campers, and swimmers, should also be careful where they step and swim.

Conclusion

Leptospirosis is more prevalent than most people are aware of, and knowledge of transmission is the best way to ensure safety. Precautions as simple as avoiding possible contaminated water, using protective equipment, and proper hygiene can do much to avoid infection.

However, even with the best preventative measures, health problems can emerge unexpectedly. This is precisely why health insurance is a critical safety net. A well-designed policy can pay some of the medical costs, taking the financial stress off your hands while allowing you to receive quality care.
