Rotavirus infection causes symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and stomach pain. The virus spreads through contaminated surfaces and poor hygiene. Early diagnosis and proper hydration help prevent severe dehydration and complications, especially in young children.

Rotavirus is considered one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis, estimated to cause approximately 200,000 deaths worldwide on an annual basis.

Rotavirus is a common cause of diarrhoea in young children, but it can also affect individuals of all ages. The virus is less prevalent in developed countries than in developing countries.

This article reviews rota virus signs and symptoms that can help in early diagnosis, timely treatment, and preventing complications.

What are rotavirus symptoms?

Rotavirus infections are highly contagious and primarily spread through contact with contaminated hands, surfaces, or food. The symptoms often appear within two days of exposure and range from mild to severe. The most common rotavirus symptoms include:

●       Watery diarrhoea

The main symptom of rotavirus is watery, non-bloody diarrhea lasting 3 to 8 days, which can quickly lead to dehydration if not managed. Infants and toddlers are especially vulnerable, showing signs like dry mouth, sunken eyes, lethargy, reduced urination, and no tears when crying.

●      Vomiting

Sudden onset of vomiting is another frequent symptom. Vomiting is accompanied by diarrhoea and can last for a couple of days. Frequent vomiting further accelerates fluid and electrolyte loss, making dehydration a concern.

●       Fever

Low to moderate fever is a typical symptom of rotavirus, though it may vary among individuals. This ranges between 37.5°C – 39°C or 99.5°F – 102°F. Fever is the body’s natural response to infection, but it can contribute to fluid loss through sweating.

●       Abdominal pain

Mild to moderate abdominal cramps and discomfort are frequent symptoms of rotavirus infection. These pains result from intestinal inflammation and increased bowel activity caused by the virus.

Conclusion

Rotavirus is a preventable but potentially severe illness, particularly in children. Recognising the rotavirus symptoms early and seeking medical attention can help avoid complications.

Having health insurance ensures access to necessary treatments, hospital visits, and rehydration therapy, easing financial burdens and providing peace of mind. An appropriate plan ensures overall well-being by covering both preventative and emergency care.
