Cloves are the fragrant, dried buds of the clove tree, prized for their bold aroma and pungent flavour. Widely used as a spice, they add depth to both sweet and savoury dishes. Cloves contain essential nutrients that can help aid digestion, improve oral health, and regulate blood sugar.

Although cloves are known for their many benefits, careless consumption can lead to certain side effects. Read on to discover some potential side effects of cloves.

Side effects of cloves

While cloves are considered safe to use in moderate quantities, excessive use could cause some side effects. Some disadvantages of clove are:

  1. Hypoglycaemia

Individuals with diabetes should be extremely cautious when consuming cloves, as they can reduce blood sugar levels. While small amounts could prove beneficial, excessive consumption could lead to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

  1. Digestive issues

Eugenol in cloves can irritate the stomach and cause nausea, heartburn, and diarrhoea. Therefore, it is advisable to consume cloves in moderate quantities.

  1. Allergic reactions

People who are highly sensitive to clove oil should be careful while consuming cloves as it could cause allergic reactions like irritation or ulcers.

  1. Blood-thinning issues

Cloves possess blood-thinning properties, which can be risky for individuals with pre-existing conditions or those taking anticoagulant medications. This effect may also increase the risk of excessive bleeding, making it important to avoid cloves before and after surgery.

Conclusion

Cloves are known for their health benefits and medicinal properties. However, it is prudent to understand the side effects of cloves to ensure responsible consumption. It’s best to consult your healthcare provider if you have specific health concerns. A health insurance policy can cover the costs of consultations and medical care if any side effects arise. Prevention and awareness are key to making healthier dietary choices and minimising any potential risks from the foods we consume.
