Green tea is prepared using the unoxidised leaves of Camellia sinensis herb. It is one of the least processed tea leaves and contains the most antioxidants. Green tea decoction is prepared by steeping the leaves in hot water for a few minutes. Research suggests that this can aid in weight loss. However, excessive long-term consumption of green tea can cause many health issues due to its caffeine content.

Let’s understand the disadvantages of drinking green tea.

Side effects of green tea

Some of the side effects of green tea are as follows:

  1. Caffeine overdose: Since green tea contains caffeine, consuming more than 3-4 cups daily can lead to overdose. This can cause anxiety, insomnia, or constipation in the long run.
  1. Seizure: Caffeine can potentially worsen seizure if consumed in large amounts. It’s recommended to consult a healthcare professional before drinking green tea if you suffer from epilepsy.
  1. Liver damage: Green tea extracts have been linked to liver damage. Before taking the extract, talk to your doctor.
  1. Upset stomach: Consuming more than 3 cups of green tea can cause diarrhoea as it has laxative properties. Excess intake can also cause upset stomach and abdominal pain.
  1. Iron deficiency: Green tea interferes with iron absorption and can cause anaemia if consumed in large quantities. Therefore, people taking iron supplements should avoid it.
  1. Weak bones: Green tea decoction can increase the amount of calcium flushed out in urine. So, people with osteoporosis should avoid overconsuming the beverage.

Conclusion

To avoid side effects, it is important to consume green tea in moderation. Mindful consumption ensures maximum benefits. Additionally, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and preventive healthcare contribute to overall well-being. A suitable health insurance policy can ease the burden of medical expenses. Opting for a family plan, including health insurance for parents, provides comprehensive coverage for your entire family.
