Treatment of Chikungunya Disease

Chikungunya is a viral disease that is transmitted to human beings through the bite of an infectious mosquito, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The name chikungunya is derived from a word in the Kimakonde language that means “bent over or stooped walk” because an infection causes severe joint pain.

No proper chikungunya virus treatment is reported to provide effective care, but certain treatments can help manage your symptoms related to chikungunya disease.

What are the Treatments of Chikungunya?

No vaccines or specific chikungunya medication is available on the market to treat the disease. However, one can manage the symptoms by taking additional treatment to ease the effects:

  • Taking acetaminophen or paracetamol to reduce fever and body pain
  • It is advisable not to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or aspirin until your healthcare provider rules out dengue to reduce the risk of bleeding.
  • Drink plenty of fluids helps to stay hydrated.
  • If you have chikungunya, then prevent yourself from getting bitten by mosquitoes during the first week of illness.

So, prevention and control rely heavily on reducing the number of water-filled habitats where these mosquitoes breed and spread infection.

Conclusion

As chikungunya medicine is not available at present, the best possible way to avoid chikungunya disease is to prevent mosquito bites, which can be done using insect repellents, wearing full clothes, or staying indoors. People should maintain proper cleanliness by removing stagnant water around their houses to avoid breeding mosquitoes. Having health insurance ensures access to timely medical care and support in managing symptoms effectively.
