Premature rupture of membranes, or PROM, refers to the early rupture of the amniotic sac before labor begins, increasing risks for both the mother and baby. While PROM is a pregnancy complication that may result either from an unknown cause, factors such as vaginal bleeding, congential disorders and cervical insufficiency can contribute.
The symptoms of PROM
People experiencing symptoms of PROM or prelabour rupture in pregnancy may notice dampness in their underwear, increased vaginal discharge, or a sensation of wetness that does not stop, such as:
- A sudden gush or continuous leakage of fluid from the vagina, which may feel like uncontrollable urination.
- Clear or slightly yellowish fluid that continues to leak, unlike normal vaginal discharge.
- Foul smelling and greenish discharge that may be accompanied by fever.
- Mild cramping, pelvic pressure, or a decrease in fetal movement.
Managing PROM
If you experience any symptoms of PROM, it’s important to reach out to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. As managing PROM requires hospitalisation, monitoring, or even early delivery, having a maternity health insurance policy could keep you secure, ensuring timely medical attention. As expecting parents, ensure to check your policy coverage to confirm coverage for pregnancy complications like PROM.
