Among Asian countries, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful places to visit. Despite being tiny, there is so much to see in this country, such as the mighty Himalaya mountains, rivers, wilderness, and never-ending greenery. Though is a Buddhist country, meat- and fish-based delicacies are available in restaurants for tourists. Let us look at some of Bhutan’s popular dishes.

  • Momo

Also known as dumplings, Momo is one of the favourite dishes among the people of Bhutan. It is prepared using soft dough, which is filled with shredded vegetables or minced meat mixed with mild spices. The momo pieces are steamed until they become soft.   • Thukpa

This food is a great soupy noodle available on the street sides in Bhutan. The noodle has a strong flavour of garlic, chopped onions, and chilli.   • Yaksha Shakam

If visitors to Bhutan want to savour the taste of Yak meat, this country is the place to be in. The dish is said to be a delicacy as it is made of yak meat, yak milk cheese, spices, and chillies that are really hot to taste. This dish is cooked over low flame till the meat is tender and served along with hot rice. This is truly a popular dish of Bhutan.

  • Jasha Maroo

This is a local dish. Shredded or finely cut chicken pieces are cooked along with tomates, onion, chilli, and coriander leaves along with chicken broth. It is an easy dish to prepare and a wholesome meal. People love to buy the dish from street carts while on the move. It is said to be one of Bhutan’s popular dishes.

  • Phaksha Paa

This is basically a pork stew. The cook boils the pork meat in water along with radish and carrots. When the stew is on the boil and on simmering heat, pork and chillies are added and cooked till the meat is tender. This dish is best served with rice and is a popular dish of Bhutan.

  • Ema Datshi

This Bhutanese stew is acclaimed to be the national dish of the country. The stew is cooked in yak cheese, oil, garlic, onion and chillies. The broth is served along with red rice, which is locally popular.
