When purchasing a motorcycle, considering the engine type is of utmost importance. Often, your choice will impact your overall riding experience since different engine types perform differently under varying circumstances.

So, whether you’re a city commuter, long-distance tourer or adventurer, you must prioritise reliability, optimal performance and longevity. Read on to discover popular motorcycle engine types and their features.

Types of motorcycle engines

The popular types of motorcycle engines include:

1.     Single-cylinder engine

Single-cylinder engines use one cylinder that may be positioned vertically, horizontally or slanted. They are best for small bikes with small cubic capacities and are common among commuter bikes. Their simple designs make maintenance, repairs and replacements more affordable.

2.     Two-cylinder engines

Two-cylinder engines have two cylinders, meaning they carry more weight than the single-cylinder engines. There are various bike engine types under the two-cylinder category, as follows:

  • Parallel twin engines: They contain two cylinders arranged side-by-side on the same cylinder block. They are smaller than other two-cylinder engines and are common in commuter, sports and dirt bike models with medium or high displacement.
  • V-twin or L-twin engine: A two-cylinder piston engine placed in a longitudinal or transverse position to form a ‘V’ or ‘L’ shape. Each cylinder lies in a separate block, increasing the engine’s size and power.

3.     Triple-cylinder engines or inline-three engines

They are medium-sized engines with three cylinders arranged straight along the crankshaft. They are narrower and lighter, and only a few motorcycles have such engines.

4.     Four-cylinder engines or inline-four engines

These engines have four cylinders, and they come in various types. They usually have a loud exhaust sound and are quite popular in the Indian bike market.

Note: The cylinder often powers the engine; therefore, the more cylinders there are, the more powerful the engine will be.

Conclusion

Choosing the right motorcycle engine type for your riding style is crucial. This includes balancing performance, fuel efficiency, and control. Regardless of the engine type you select, remember to wear protective gear while riding and acquire third-party two wheeler insurance, as mandated by the law in India. Additionally, it is wise to acquire comprehensive bike insurance, as it safeguards you against unforeseen road incidents, potential liabilities, and financial losses.
