It can be tempting to just hop on your bike and go about your daily schedule. However, it is important to check the optimal condition of your motorcycle before you ride it. A pre-ride inspection is a safety check that ensures the motorcycle is in good condition and ready to ride.

Steps to do a motorcycle pre-inspection

Here is a how to do a motorcycle pre-ride inspection:

The first step in the pre-inspection is to walk around your motorcycle, visually and manually check every component of the bike. Start from the left side and walk around clockwise.

While doing the pre-ride inspection, you should check the “TCLOCK” – tyres, controls, lights and electrics, oil and fuels, chassis and kickstands.

Following is a brief overview of the TCLOCK:

  1. Tyres and wheel

Make sure that both tyres are in good condition and that no object or bulge is stuck in them. Also, check the pressure and wear of the tyres.

Ensure that the wheels have no bent, broken, or missing spokes. Do not forget to check the excessive grease, which indicates a cracked seal.

  1. Controls

Check the thickness of the front and rear brake pads. Ensure that there is no fluid leakage. Check the clutch and shift lever are smooth to operate.

  1. Lights and electrics

See that the headlights, brake light and signal lights are working properly. Make sure the lenses are intact.

  1. Oil and fuels

Check if the oil, fuels and coolant are at the appropriate level. Ensure there is no leakage of any fluid.

  1. Chassis

Check if the frame and suspension are damaged, and make sure that all the fasteners are tight.

  1. Kickstands

Ensure that the kickstand is working properly so your bike does not tip over.

Conclusion

A brief inspection before riding a motorcycle can save you time and money in the long run. For better protection, though, consider getting a bike insurance policy to cover accidents, damage, and theft.
