Among all the responsibilities that come with being a motorcycle owner, proper maintenance is one of the most important.

Keeping a simple motorcycle maintenance checklist on hand will help you in several ways: you will be able to keep your motorbike in excellent condition, prevent safety hazards, improve performance, and reduce the cost of services and repairs.

Remember, while maintenance is essential, a comprehensive two-wheeler insurance policy can also be beneficial, as it may protect you from future financial risks.

Read on to know what should be included in your motorcycle maintenance checklist.

Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist Complete List

Here are some essential things you should check when conducting maintenance checks on your motorcycle:

Engine Oil and Oil Filter:

Replacing the oil filter is a key part of maintenance that no bike owner should ignore.

The location of the oil filter must allow for the proper filling of the engine oil. Make sure the engine oil is below the indication line but not too low to cause damage to your systems. Importantly, make sure to inspect the colour of your engine oil. If it appears blacker in colour, it's time for a change.

Tyres:

Every bike general service checklist will require you to check the tyres. Make sure to check the pressure level and tread of your bike's tyres before taking it for a spin. Inspect the tyres regularly for signs of wear and tear and replace them if necessary.

Brakes:

Brake pads and brake fluid levels on bikes should be checked at regular intervals. Check whether the brake pedal is travelling properly and ensure the brake pads are not overly worn out. If the brake pads are thinner than 2mm, they will need to be replaced.

Battery:

Make sure you don’t subject your bike’s battery to extreme temperatures. Clean off accumulated dust, grim or other pollutants at least once every few days. You can also use anti-corrosive spray to deter damage around terminals. At least once a month, check battery fluid levels.

Air Filter:

Inspect your air filter regularly to remove dust, dirt, and debris. Replace the filter if it’s clogged, dirty, or damaged.

Coolant:

Check your coolant levels at set intervals or whenever you notice something is amiss. Bike coolant has to be changed every 2 years or so based on your bike model.

Chains:

Regularly clean the grease and grime from the chains and lubricate them with oil. Replace them when you notice excessive wear.

Conclusion

Developing a personal motorbike maintenance checklist can extend the lifespan of your two-wheeler and keep it in top condition. Regular maintenance improves performance and reduces the chance of accidents.

However, to truly keep safe on the road and access professional maintenance for your bike whenever required, it is prudent to acquire a comprehensive two wheeler insurance policy.
