Why is it important to understand PSI in two-wheelers?

Proper two-wheeler tire PSI (pounds per square inch) is crucial for safety, performance, and fuel efficiency. Recommended pressures vary by bike type: commuter motorcycles need 25-32 PSI front/28-36 PSI rear; sport bikes require higher pressures around 36 PSI front/42 PSI rear; and scooters with smaller wheels need lower pressures between 24-30 PSI. Regular monitoring prevents accidents and ensures insurance compliance.

PSI, or pounds per square inch, refers to your bike’s tyre pressure, and maintaining the proper pressure is crucial for ensuring safety, performance, and fuel efficiency. Under-inflated tyres can lead to poor fuel efficiency and faster tyre wear, while over-inflated tyres may compromise road grip and handling. And so, for optimal performance, checking the tyre pressure before long rides and adjusting it based on the load you are carrying is crucial.

Recommended tyre pressure for bikes based on tyre sizes:

The recommended proper road bike tire pressure depends on the type of bike, riding conditions, the tyre size, the terrain, and the rider’s load.

  • In commuter motorcycles, the PSI ranges from 25 to 32 for the front tire and 28 to 36 for the rear tyre.
  • In sport and high-performance bikes, the values may be higher, typically around 36 PSI for the front and 42 PSI for the rear.
  • And, in scooters, which have smaller wheels, the values are usually low between 24 and 30 PSI.

Ensuring safety and insurance compliance

Maintaining the proper air pressure for bike tires not only improves safety but also plays a role in insurance compliance. Regular tyre maintenance can reduce the risk of accidents, which could impact two-wheeler insurance claims. Many insurers consider the condition of a vehicle, including tyre maintenance, when assessing claims, making it all the more important to ensure the right PSI levels at all times.
