Brown sugar is a type of sweetener made by mixing white sugar with molasses. The presence of molasses gives it its distinctive brown colour and flavour. Brown sugar is used in baking and as a sweetener in drinks. It is rich in nutrients and minerals and, hence, has many health benefits. However, you should be aware of the brown sugar side effects arising from high consumption.

Side effects of eating brown sugar

Some of the side effects of brown sugar intake in excess include:

  1. Increase in blood sugar levels

Regular consumption of brown sugar in high quantities can lead to an increase in blood sugar levels. This can increase the risk of diabetes.

  1. Increase in weight

A highly sugary diet can impact metabolism and cause a sudden increase in weight. Brown sugar, high in calories, can lead to obesity when consumed in excessive quantities.

  1. Dental issues

Brown sugar can be stickier due to the presence of molasses,  making it harder to remove from the teeth. This can potentially increase the risk of tooth cavities.

  1. Digestive issues

Increased consumption of brown sugar can cause bloating, gas, and diarrhoea. It is also known to worsen symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

  1. Heart disease

Regular consumption of high quantities of brown sugar can lead to an irregular heartbeat. This may lead to cardiac diseases.

Conclusion

While brown sugar is said to have a slightly better nutritional profile than white sugar, regular consumption in large quantities can cause many health effects. Therefore, it is important to consume it in moderation to reduce potential side effects. Besides maintaining a healthy diet, securing medical insurance is necessary to deal with any sudden health crisis.  You can also opt for health insurance for the family to cover all members of your house.
