India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences has announced that data gleaned from 2009 to 2022 shows 6,751 people in the country lost their lives from heat waves. Heat waves are the most prominent ramification of climate change. So, how to prevent heat waves?

While questions such as “How to prevent heatwaves?” and “How can we stop heat waves?” have deeper implications and are more technical, we can surely learn how to protect ourselves from heat waves.

Heat waves: Do’s and Don’ts

Heat waves occur when temperatures increase significantly from what is typical for a specific area. These elevated temperatures, which vary by location due to different historical climate patterns, can prompt experts to declare the onset of a heat wave. Factors such as high humidity, strong winds, and the length of the heat wave can intensify its effects.

How to protect yourself from heat wave?

Here is a list of actions that can protect you from heatwaves:

  • Avoid going out in the sun between 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, including water, lemon water, buttermilk, etc., as they help in keeping the body hydrated.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes and instead opt for loose, lightweight cotton clothes.
  • Do not work outdoors between 12.00 noon and 3.00 pm. Also, do not indulge in strenuous activities.
  • Do not forget to carry your water if you must go out.
  • Avoid coffee, tea, and carbonated soft drinks as they dehydrate the body.
  • Do not consume stale food and foods too high in protein.
  • Do not leave children and pets in vehicles.
  • If you are a pet parent, keep your pets in the shade and make water available for them.
  • Make use of curtains, shutters, and sunshades to keep your home cool from within.
  • Use fans and damp clothing and frequently bathe in cold water.
