New Zealand cuisine has only recently begun to be appreciated around the world. Dishes from this island nation are heavily influenced by the Māori culture.  Most of them include seafood. Having been a British colony for many years, there’s also a lot of debate about the origin of certain foods in New Zealand. That said, you’ll be spoilt for choice here.

List of popular foods in New Zealand

Here are some of New Zealand’s famous foods.

  • Fish & Chips

This New Zealand staple is closely related to its British variant. The difference lies in the fish used. The fish is typically battered and fried and served with thick-cut fried chips. You can savour the flavours of red cod, hoki, tarahiki and elephant fish.

  • Rēwena bread

In the Māori language, this translates to a form of sourdough bread. It is made with a potato-based starter that gives it a unique hint of sweetness. Enjoy it with soup or drizzled with honey.

  • Bluff oysters

Harvested only for a few months each year, these oysters are often considered the best in the world. They’re known for their plump, creamy texture and mineral flavour that pairs well with a glass of fine wine. The oysters can be eaten raw or fried.  If you think you might be allergic – make sure you’ve got travel insurance to deal with any medical treatment.

  • Meat pie

New Zealand’s meat pies are known for their inventive fillings. Unlike the general idea of a pie that must be eaten with a fork and knife, these are designed to be snacked on as you walk down the streets.

  • Lamb chops

A lamb chop is a must-have when you are in New Zealand. The meat is slow-cooked with herbs in a delicate red wine sauce. This dish is known for its layered flavours.

Conclusion

New Zealand’s flavourful food makes it easy to go overboard. An upset stomach can ruin a holiday. So, make sure you enjoy everything, but in moderation. More importantly, ensure your adventures are covered by single-trip travel insurance. This will take care of any surprise doctor consultations and let you enjoy a stress-free holiday.
