What is PA cover in car insurance?

Personal accident cover, or PA cover, is a type of cover in car insurance that offers you financial compensation as per the policy’s terms and conditions in case of an accident. Covering death and disablement arising out of injury, a personal accident cover in car insurance provides the required funds for treatment and covers steep medical bills. A PA cover is one of the most useful features of car insurance.

Benefits of personal accident cover in car insurance

There are several benefits of a PA cover in car insurance. Some of the major benefits provided by it are:

Financial help

A personal accident cover gives financial support if you suffer an injury due to an accident. It ensures you and your family don’t face sudden money problems during such tough times.

Coverage for disability

If the accident leads to any kind of disability, the personal accident cover provides a fixed payout. This amount can help you manage medical expenses or daily needs.

Peace of mind

Despite the best efforts taken, driving has its share of risks. With this cover, you know that you and your loved ones will get monetary support if something unexpected happens on road.

Is PA cover mandatory for car insurance in India?

Yes. A PA cover is mandatory for car insurance in India. While previously, only third-party car insurance was mandatory, the growing number of accidental injuries prompted the government and regulatory authorities to take notice.

The Motor Vehicles Act and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) have made it mandatory for vehicle owners to have a PA cover. The primary objective of making personal accident cover in car insurance mandatory is to ensure you remain financially protected in the event of injury due to an accident.

Personal accident cover compensation

The quantum of compensation offered by a personal accident cover, also known as CPA cover in car insurance, depends on the nature of injury (see table):

Nature of Injury Scale of Compensation
Death 100%
Loss of two limbs or sight of two eyes or one limb and sight of one eye 100%
Loss of one limb or sight of one eye 50%
Permanent total disablement from injuries other than named above 100%

Types of personal accident coverages in car insurance

CPA cover in car insurance may come in several forms. These include:

1

Personal accident cover for owner driver

This PA cover in car insurance for the vehicle’s owner, who is also the car’s driver. It provides financial compensation when the owner-driver sustains an injury due to an accident, as per the policy’s terms and conditions.

2

Personal accident cover for paid driver

This is an optional cover and you need to pay an extra premium to avail it. Under it, the paid driver gets compensated in case he/she sustains injuries while driving the insured vehicle.

3

Personal accident cover for passengers

You can also avail of a personal accident cover for passengers, limited to the vehicle's carrying capacity. This ensures that passengers travelling in the vehicle receive financial compensation in the event that they sustain injuries due to an accident.
