First look at the new 'Lodgycal' MPV

Overview

The Renault Lodgy is the French manufacturer's first foray into the popular Indian MPV market. They have stuck to the same core design principles as their highly acclaimed mid-sized SUV, the Duster. Considering Renault's swift success in India, it is likely that their 'Lodgycal' approach will resonate in the MPV segment and give competitors a run for their money.

Renault Lodgy - At a Glance

  • Engine CC - 1461 cc (diesel), Available as 84 bhp and 108.5 bhp
  • Seating capacity - 7 or 8
  • Price range - Rs. 8.2-10.9 lakh
  • Mileage - 21.04 kmpl (84 bhp), 19.98 kmpl (108.5 bhp)
  • Colors - Pearl White, Royal Orchid, Planet Grey, Moonlight Silver, Indigo Breeze
  • Variants - Lodgy 85PS STD, Lodgy 85PS RXE, Lodgy 85PS RXL, Lodgy 85PS RXZ, Lodgy 110PS RXL, Lodgy 110PS RXZ (7-seater), Lodgy 110PS RXZ ( 8-seater)

Exterior Aesthetics

At first sight, the Lodgy looks much larger than other MPVs like the Innova and Honda Mobilio. Its length stretches up to 4498 mm, by far the longest in this segment. When coupled with a sloping roof, the Lodgy does not appear to have the most graceful looks, especially if viewed sideways. The small 15 -inch tires don't complement the heft of the Lodgy.

Renault's recognizable blueprint is prominent in Lodgy's chrome-laden hexagonal front grille. The headlights with daytime running lamps add to the squat stance of this bulky MPV. In comparison, the arrowhead tail lamps add character to the rear of the car.

The abundant usage of chrome trims coupled with Renault's design principles attempt to reduce the boxy look that is prevalent in most MPVs including the Lodgy. But, the edge it lacks in looks is made up thro ugh excellent comfort and performance.

Inside the Cabin

Renault's 'Lodgycal' tag line is evident when you step inside the car. The long wheelbase translates into more cabin room, allowing three rows of seats. The Lodgy is available as a 7-seater and an 8-seater, giving the buyer a choice of having two bucket seats or an undivided bench seat in the middle row. Though it features adequate leg space in the front two rows, tall passengers might have an uncomfortable ride if seated in the last row during a long journey.

With all seats upright, the Lodgy can accommodate 207 liters of luggage space, much less than the 300 liters offered by the Toyota Innova. However, if you need more space for luggage, you can remove the last row to increase the space to 589 liters.

The most striking interior feature of Lodgy is its premium two-tone dashboard. Dominated by a piano-black center console with the 'MediaNav' display, the dashboard also has an entertainment system that supports Bluetooth, aux and USB. It doubles up as a screen for the rearview camera. Here again, the chrome accents used to highlight the sleek design around the front AC vents and 3-pod instrument cluster add to the Lodgy's premium appeal.

The interiors are done up stylishly with leather upholstery, while also providing practical storage areas and cup holders. Passengers in the middle row can use drop-down tray tables that come fitted with a cup holder. The inclusion of 12V charging points in all three rows is a well thought of feature, among others, like:

  • Roof mounted air conditioning ( with dedicated vents for the last two rows)
  • Intuitive audio and phone controls
  • Cruise control and speed limiter
  • Leather wrapped steering wheel with glossy metal finish

Performance

Passengers in the middle row can use drop-down tray tables that come fitted with a cup holder. The inclusion of 12V charging points in all three rows is a well thought of feature, among others, like:

Lodgy's drive is zippy and responsive, controlled by a 6-speed manual transmission (first in its segment) that is adjusted for optimum fuel economy. The MPV claims a mileage of 19.98 km/l (ARAI certified), making it a smart buy not only for long trips but also for city driving. However, Lodgy's large size may be a hindrance while parking and driving during peak traffic hours.

Cons

  • Boxy looks
  • Small boot space
  • After-sales service not well established

Pros

  • Most powerful engine in the segment
  • Stylish interiors
  • Useful interior amenities

In addition to a mind-blowing performance, Renault has managed to blend some important safety features as well:

  • ABS with EBD and brake assist
  • Dual front air bags
  • Rear parking sensor and camera

The Renault Lodgy will be pitted against MPVs like Toyota Innova, Honda Mobilio and Suzuki Ertiga. To increase its market share, Renault will have to capitalize on Lodgy's superior performance and choose a competitive entry price point.
