Things to Do in New Zealand

  • Te Papa Museum, Wellington The Te Papa Museum in Wellington is New Zealand’s national museum. This fun, interactive and enthralling place is full of Māori artefacts. It also has a colourful meetinghouse, called marae. With natural history and environment exhibitions, galleries exhibiting Pacific and New Zealand history and a National Art Collection, this museum offers an enriching experience. Children can enjoy the themed hands-on ‘discovery centres’.

  • Waitangi Treaty Grounds Waitangi Treaty Grounds are the most significant historic site in New Zealand. They occupy the lawns of a headland, and it was here, on 6 February 1840, that the first 43 Māori chiefs with the British Crown signed the Treaty of Waitangi. A copy of this treaty is preserved in the Treaty House. Admission to these grounds includes a visit to the new Museum of Waitangi, a cultural performance and a guided tour. You can also view the fine carvings on a detailed meetinghouse, which represent the major Māori tribes.

  • Blue Penguin Colony, Oamaru Every evening, blue penguins from the Oamaru little-penguin colony wade ashore, and waddle to their waterfront nests in a nearby stone quarry. They can be viewed from stands set up alongside their waddle route. Most penguins are seen in November and December, and numbers dwindle from March to August. Their clusters are called rafts and they come out for an hour just before it gets dark.

  • Mt. Eden, Auckland There is a 50m deep symmetrical crater atop Auckland’s highest volcanic cone. Known as Te Ipu Kai a Mataaho, it is considered the Food Bowl of Mataaho, the god of all things underground. Since this area is considered highly sacred, you cannot enter it. However, you can walk around to explore the mountainous paths.

  • Orakei Korako Compared to the other geothermal areas in New Zealand, Orakei Korako sees fewer tourists. However, it can easily be crowned the best geothermal area in New Zealand. Two-thirds of the original site, however, lies buried under the dammed section of the Waikato River. You can take a boat ride across the lake, and visit the café and visitor centre.

  • Victorian Precinct, Oamaru The Victorian Precinct houses some of New Zealand’s best-preserved Victorian commercial buildings. It has a modern atmosphere, and is one of the best places to window shop. Artist studios, gift stores, and bookshops dot this precinct. At night, the streets come alive with bars, and penguins! Sundays are the liveliest, with a farmer’s market.

I had heard of the road accidents in New Zealand and I was a little apprehensive to travel. However, once I booked my travel insurance online with ICICI Lombard, I felt stress-free. The process was simple, the staff was helpful and the rates, competitive. Fortunately, our trip went well, and I didn’t need to make a claim. Yet, having the protection of travel insurance gave me peace of mind

I had a bad experience in New Zealand. I was hospitalised for a stomach infection. In that phase, ICICI Lombard’s travel insurance came to my rescue. I was glad my trip was not made worse by the hassle of arranging for finances for the medical treatment. I strongly recommend opting for a plan which suits your needs; you never know when you will need it!
