That’s why choosing the best two-wheeler insurance policy helps to ensure your every ride is safe, smooth and hassle-free.

What is Bike Insurance?

Bike insurance or two-wheeler insurance financially protects you and your vehicle from accidental damages or losses. It covers repair or replacement expenses incurred due to unexpected accidents, theft, natural or man-made disasters and more. It also covers you if your bike or scooter accidentally cause damage to someone else’s vehicle or property. Bike insurance also helps you provide financial compensation in case of accidental injuries or death.

All bike owners in India are required to have at least a third-party insurance as per the Motor Vehicles Act. You will have to pay fines and penalties if you ever drive without a valid third-party coverage. Note that it does not cover own damages and its premium rates are based on engine capacity and the Indian Motor Tariff.

The right bike insurance policy helps you enjoy complete protection and peace of mind on every ride. You can choose a comprehensive two-wheeler insurance policy to get coverage for both damages to your own bike and third-party liabilities. You can also enhance your policy by opting for add-ons like zero depreciation, roadside assistance, engine protection, etc.

personal_accident

Personal Accident Coverage

According to a report from Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the number of road accidents and fatalities has increased between 2020 and 2024. A two-wheeler policy with a personal accident coverage of up to ₹15 lakhs helps you and your dependents deal with accidental disabilities or loss of life.

What is Zero Depreciation in Bike Insurance?

Zero depreciation, also known as nil depreciation, is an add-on cover that offsets the depreciation deductions on your bike or scooter’s parts. Normally, insurers charge a deduction on replaced parts based on their material. For example, plastic parts, tyres, tubes and batteries attract up to 50% depreciation while fibre glass components see around 30% depreciation.

Your bike depreciation also depends on its age. Here’s a breakdown of the same:

Bike Age Percentage of Depreciation
Less than 6 months 0%
More than 6 months but less than 1 year 5%
More than 1 year but less than 2 years 10%
More than 2 years but less than 3 years 15%
More than 3 years but less than 4 years 25%
More than 4 years but less than 5 years 35%
More than 5 years but less than 10 years 40%
More than 10 years 50%

Our zero depreciation add-on is ideal for people who have recently purchased a new bike, own a luxury two-wheeler, stay in metro cities or accident-prone areas, and looking for stronger financial protection. Note that this add-on is available at nominal extra premium.

What is IDV in Bike Insurance?

IDV or Insured Declared Value is the maximum amount your insurer will pay if your bike is stolen or completely damaged beyond repair. It is your bike's current market value, excluding depreciation. In simple terms, it's the amount you will get if your bike is lost or destroyed.

IDV is calculated based on your bike’s ex-showroom price minus depreciation. So the older your bike gets, the lower would be its IDV. Suppose your bike’s ex-showroom price is ₹120,000. Its IDV would be around ₹102,000 and ₹100,000 after one year depending upon the applicable depreciation rate.

Here’s the depreciation schedule for fixing your bike’s IDV:

Bike Age % of Depreciation For Fixing IDV
Not exceeding 6 months 5%
Exceeding 6 months but not exceeding 1 year 15%
Exceeding 1 year but not exceeding 2 years 20%
Exceeding 2 years but not exceeding 3 years 30%
Exceeding 3 years but not exceeding 4 years 40%
Exceeding 4 years but not exceeding 5 years 50%

Note that IDV for bikes aged over five years and obsolete models is calculated based on mutual understanding between the insurer and the insured.

Which Factors Impact the IDV?

What is NCB in Bike Insurance?

NCB or No Claim Bonus is a reward your insurer offers for not making any claims during the policy period. You earn a discount on your bike insurance premium for every claim-free year. You can easily claim this discount while renewing your policy.

Here are the different NCB slabs for two-wheelers:

Scenario Discount Percentage (Applicable Only on Own Damage Premium)
No claims in the first year 20%
No claims in two consecutive years 25%
No claims in three consecutive years 35%
No claims in four consecutive years 45%
No claims in five consecutive years 50%

As highlighted above, NCB offers discount on the own damage component of your bike insurance premium. Let’s understand this with an example. Suppose your own damage premium is ₹4000 and you have an NCB of 25%. Your NCB discount amount will be ₹1000, which is 25% of ₹4000. Note that NCB is not applicable on third-party premiums.

Which Factors Affect Two-Wheeler Insurance Premium?

Policy Type

The type of policy you choose directly affects your premium. While third-party insurance is quite affordable, an own damage or comprehensive bike insurance offers wider protection.

Engine’s Cubic Capacity

Your bike insurance premium depends on your vehicle’s cubic capacity (CC). A higher CC model usually has a higher premium and vice versa.

Bike’s Age & Model

Newer and premium bike models usually have higher IDV, which increases the premium. As your bike ages, its IDV lowers and the premium may depend on its condition and resale value.

Bike Modifications

Any modifications that alter the bike’s performance or appearance can increase the IDV and impact the calculation of your bike insurance premium.

No Claim Bonus (NCB)

While frequent claims can lead to higher premiums, you earn a NCB discount for riding safely and not making a claim during a policy year.

Add-ons

Opting for optional covers such as zero depreciation, engine protect, or roadside assistance increase your premium but also enhance bike insurance coverage.

Bike Insurance Price for Different Two-Wheelers

Different bike insurance policies have different premiums. This is mainly because they depend on various factors such as bike’s make and model, IDV, coverage type, add-ons, claims history, location and more. However, the cost of a third-party bike insurance plan is uniform and regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). This table shows the latest price of third-party bike insurance plans:

Bike’s cubic capacity One-year Third-party Insurance Premium Five-year Third-party Insurance Premium
Less than 75 CC ₹538 ₹2,901
75 to 150 CC ₹714 ₹3,851
150 - 350 CC ₹1,366 ₹7,365
Greater than 350 CC ₹2,804 ₹15,117

How to Effectively Compare Bike Insurance Premium?

Comparing bike insurance premiums online isn’t about choosing the lowest price. It’s about getting the right coverage at the right value. Here are some tips to effectively compare your bike insurance premium:

  • Compare Plans Online: The first step is comparing bike insurance plans online. A third-party coverage is cheaper, but a comprehensive bike insurance covers both third-party liabilities and own damage.
  • Check IDV: Pay special attention to IDVs offered across different bike insurance quotes. A lower IDV reduces premium but also lowers your claim payout in case of theft or total loss.
  • Review Coverage Details: Carefully go through the policy inclusions and exclusions to understand what’s covered and what’s not covered. Some policies may appear cheaper but offer limited benefits.
  • Evaluate Add-ons: There are multiple add-on options available in the market to improve your bike insurance coverage. However, they attract additional premium. Evaluate your needs and select the ones that actually add value to your coverage.
  • Compare Deductibles: Opting for a higher voluntary deductible lowers your payable premium but increases your out-of-pocket expense during a bike insurance claim.
  • Review Premium Break-Up: Your premium is made up of multiple components like your own damage premium, your third-party liability premium, add-on premium, personal accident coverage premium, etc. Review your premium break-up before selecting a policy.

How to Choose the Right Two-wheeler Insurance Policy?

  • Compare Policies Online

Take bike insurance quotes from multiple insurers. Look beyond just the premium and compare IDV options, add-ons, deductibles and discounts like No Claim Bonus (NCB). Select the plan that suits your needs the best.
