The Consulate General of India in Dubai has issued an advisory for all Indian Nationals travelling to UAE

The Consulate General of India in Dubai has advised all the Indian nationals travelling to United Arab Emirates (UAE) to have adequate medical insurance  to cover any expenditure during emergencies. The advisory is said to have been issued on the basis of high medical treatment costs in UAE and some instances of Indian travellers meeting with unforeseen accidents that resulted in huge medical bills beyond their capabilities.

In a statement dated 21 February 2019 which was released on Twitter, the Indian Embassy in Dubai said, “All Indian nationals who are travelling to UAE for visiting and tourism purpose are hereby advised to take adequate health insurance  to cover up any expenditure on medical exigencies.”

The statement further stated that, “This advisory is being issued keeping in view the high cost of medical treatment in UAE and also on the basis of some instances of Indian travellers meeting with unforeseen accidents involving huge medical bills, beyond the capacity of the traveller or their family members.”

Recently, in two separate incidents, two Indian tourists suffered medical contingencies in the Gulf country within the span of two months. The first incident saw an old diabetes patient suffering a brain stroke due to high blood pressure while on a holiday in UAE, resulting in over AED 130,000 or nearly 25 lakh Indian rupees as hospital bills for the treatment of the tourist.

While in another incident, a 61-year-old retired professor from India slipped into coma after a freak accident during the evening walk that led to head injuries and internal haemorrhage. She was visiting her son’s family residing in Dubai when the incident occurred on 6th February 2019. It resulted in medical bills of around Rs. 35 lakhs which remained out of reach of her family members despite being helped by local communities and the hospital authorities.
