Upcoming Amendment to Central Motor Vehicles Act to Bring Relief to Drivers

July 25 2018

In a move that is sure to bring a lot of cheer to motorists all over the country, the Centre has written to state governments regarding proposed changes to save drivers from harassment in the Central Motor Vehicles Act. This Act, if passed in the Lok Sabha will allow drivers to have important document such as driving license, pollution certificate and insurance on their smartphones.

Drivers throughout the country have complained of police harassment over non-production of documents in the event of them violating traffic rules. Traffic police always ask offending drivers to show relevant documents and also seize their driving license, which has to be collected at a later date from the guard on production of a receipt. The traffic police also don’t reveal the reason for seizure of driving license.

The situation is even worse for drivers of commercial vehicles. There are many complaints from these drivers which say that they are often asked to pay graft if they fail to produce the requested documents. The harassment is multiplied if an offence is committed by both, drivers of commercial and private vehicles alike, if they are caught for a second time before the collection date of their seized driving license.

Seizure of driving license makes it difficult to drive on s, and not only that, it is also a task to collect the license from the guard’s office. Needless to say, all drivers on the road have welcomed this new move by the government.
